On the 12th, OpenAI officially announced the GPT-5.1 update. This update is an improved version that actively incorporates user feedback on GPT-5, which was released last August. Unlike the previous model that was criticized for being somewhat cold, GPT-5.1 enables much warmer and more natural conversations.

Two Smart Choices Split into Two Models
GPT-5.1 is offered in two main versions. GPT-5.1 Instant is the basic model that quickly answers everyday questions. On the other hand, GPT-5.1 Thinking is a reasoning-specialized model that answers complex problems with deeper consideration. The system automatically determines the difficulty of the question and selects the appropriate model.
Customized conversation possible with 8 different personalities
The most notable feature of this update is that you can directly set the tone of the conversation. You can choose from eight different speaking styles: Default, Friendly, Efficient, Professional, Candid, Quirky, Nerdy, and Cynical. For work purposes, you can select Professional, or if you want to chat casually like with a friend, choose Friendly. During the conversation, ChatGPT may also suggest changing the tone first.

Improving the Ability to Follow Instructions Accurately
When using regular ChatGPT, you've probably experienced asking for "answers in exactly 6 words" but receiving longer responses. GPT-5.1 follows these specific instructions much more accurately. In the example shared by OpenAI, it responded with exactly 6 words when asked for a 6-word limit.
My math and coding skills have improved as well
GPT-5.1 Instant is equipped with adaptive reasoning capabilities. It responds quickly to simple questions and spends more time thinking about difficult problems. As a result, its ability to solve math problems and coding tasks has improved overall. In particular, the GPT-5.1 Thinking model tries to reduce technical jargon and explain things more simply.
Who can use it and from when
GPT-5.1 is currently being rolled out gradually to Pro, Plus, Go, and Business paid users. All paid users will have access within a few days, after which it will also be made available to free users. Enterprise and education customers will receive a 7-day early access period. The existing GPT-5 model will remain available exclusively to paid subscribers for three more months.
